ROSES, AND CHOCOLATES, AND BEARS…OH MY!

You know that time of year. The time when love is in the air and dates are being planned. And some lucky girl may be flashing an engagement ring after this special day. This day that I speak of is Valentine’s Day. Yes, the dreaded V-Day. The day that a sea of pink and red will be in every store, and the once sweet smell of chocolate now turns your stomach. And what you thought was a person stalking you is just that heart-shaped helium balloon that seems to be following you on every aisle. And forget about going out to eat on that night—not that there will be any available seating. For there will be no accommodations for a table-for-one situation on Love Day. Instead of leap year you wish that it was just leap day every year so that we could just jump right over February 14th. Why? Because even though this day was designed to showcase the love that people have for each other, it also unintentionally puts a shining, uninvited light on those that are single. You may feel like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz who was the last one in line in hopes to finally receive something from the wizard, but all the goods had run out. And her disappointment is understood when she states, “I don’t think there’s anything in that black bag for me.” Because all dates come out of a black bag, right?
If you are single, no matter the reason, this day can be hard to get through. You dread it when it comes, and you are so happy when it is over—especially since all the Valentine chocolate and conversation hearts will get marked down! But thank goodness it is only one day out of the entire year. But this feeling often arises at other couple-y (Yes, that’s a word!) events and occasions, as well. So, there is a constant reminder that you are the s-word—SINGLE! But all is still good. The God who created everything loves you more than anyone else can. And He did the ultimate to show His love. No matter your state of being, there is a reminder in God’s Word that “…nothing can ever separate us from His love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels won’t, and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep God’s love away. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, or where we are—high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean—nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when He died for us.” (Romans 8:38-39 TLB)
