I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR

I heard of a story once before about a mother and her daughter that lived humbly. Okay, they actually would have been considered homeless by most people's standards. If I remember the story correctly, they lived in a tent-like structure, and they shared one dress. You heard me right. They owned one dress between the two. One would wear the dress during the day to school or work and the other would wear the dress after the other returned. I have no idea how they got in this state or how long they remained in this circumstance, but one thing is for sure--fashion was not their biggest concern.

Matthew 6:25 says,“So I tell you, don’t worry about the things you need to live—what you will eat, drink, or wear. Life is more important than food, and the body is more important than what you put on it." And part of Hebrews 13:5 states, "...be content with what you have..." How many of you, like me, open your closet and think that you have nothing to wear? Or do you get tired of looking at and wearing the same old thing? Or do you shop til' you drop, but with time you have forgotten that you even made those purchases? I will admit that I have been guilty of all three. The fact that so many stores are closing may be God's way of keeping me from shopping so much--even though Amazon is my frenemy right now :-D But it is interesting that the bible does not suggest, give exceptions to, or accommodate in these verses. They are clear cut demands and expectations that God has for His children. Matthew 6:28-30 even asks us why we worry about clothes. Of course, I am not suggesting that it is a sin to shop or enjoy fashion. But the bottom line is that clothes are not worth worrying over. As I have heard it said before, 'it is okay to own things....just don't let things own you.' Be thankful to God for what you do have. So many are surviving with much less.

Thank you so much for the mention! Yes, it's so easy to look for contentment in things other than God, and wonder why we are never fulfilled. I enjoy fashion, but you are right - clothes don't make the (wo)man. Great read.
