“You may believe you are doing right, but the Lord will judge your reasons.” --Proverbs 16:2 (NCV)

Bread. The bane of my existence. The reason that me eating right goes so wrong. And the comfort that brings me much joy. Breadcrumbs are no exception. Someone’s momma made sure that every bit of this loaf of goodness would be used. Thus, the idea of using the leftover crumbs of bread in countless recipes is now as normal as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich—which involves bread too, by the way 😊

But as good as breadcrumbs can be, how often do we waste time chasing after them? No, I’m not referring to a few that have gotten away before you start cooking or fallen inside of a toaster after making toast. I’m talking about the lesser things in life:

  • Getting hung up on winning the battle at the expense of losing the whole war…

  • Spending too much time thinking about a mistake that you made that no one else gives a second thought…

  • Focusing on something or someone at work, at home, at church, etc. that frustrates you, even though the reality is that thing or that person may never change…

Oftentimes, God wants to give us much more like the winning of the war, the ability to move on to something else, or His peace that will carry us through a difficult situation. However, there are times that we sadly opt for only what we can see and feel in that moment of time. Any of this sound familiar?

This kinda reminds me of a story that I heard once before. A father promised to give his little girl a dollar bill for getting good grades, cleaning her room, or something of that nature. Whatever the reason may have been, when he opened his wallet he discovered that he didn’t have a dollar bill but a twenty instead. Since he didn’t have any change, he decided to give his daughter the twenty.

To his surprise, she refused to take it. She wanted what had originally been promised to her—the dollar. With no success, this father tried to explain that the twenty dollars that he was willing to give her was much more than the dollar and she could get more things with it. Her limited understanding of monetary value trapped her into thinking that only the one-dollar bill that she had been promised would satisfy her.

Crazy, ain’t it? But this is so us. But don’t worry. Grabbing for breadcrumbs happens to the best of us. I‘ve found myself fighting for lesser things—not smaller, just lesser—when God wanted to give me something that had more significance and value. And when He did give me what He wanted me to have, I didn’t have enough energy to enjoy those things that held more value because I spent way too much time and energy on the lesser things.

Whatever your breadcrumb situation may be, take some time to step back and reevaluate what’s really going on. Be sure to seek the Lord and His infinite wisdom to see if you’re rightfully focusing on this issue or person or if you’re wasting time on the matter. Side note: Sometimes something really is an issue, but our attitude and perspective can be totally wrong. In other words, you can be right but wrong—right about an assumption but wrong about how you’re handling it.

Don’t fight for breadcrumbs when God wants to give you the whole loaf of bread. There’ll be times when we need to let go of what we think is a big thing and give way to what God knows is really worth it. And remember this. Even though everything’s small in His sight, God’s love for you is so massive that the whole world cannot contain it!
